The story centres on three men from a provincial town who buy a lottery ticket. They win €6 million, but the ticket is stolen, so they try everything in their power to get it back. The three protagonists are played by Dorian Boguţă, Dragoş Bucur and Alexandru Papadopol, and together with Negoescu, the three also serve as the film’s producers. The budget amounts to only €50,000. The team will start scouting for locations in April, with plans to shoot in Bucharest or one of the smaller towns near Romania’s capital. Ana Drăghici is the DoP.

According to Negoescu, Two Lottery Tickets will test whether filmmaking can be profitable in Romania. He thinks that popular comedies should be made without any help from the state and that state grants should only be used for auteur films. The director says that production costs are lower outside the state-funded system, which makes a project like Two Lottery Tickets not only feasible, but also possibly profitable if the film takes more than 25,000 admissions.

One of the promoters of a micro-budget section at the project contests organised annually by the Romanian National Film Center, Negoescu recently won a grant for his next feature, Never Let It Go (see the news).
