Finnish films reach one million admissions in three months
The Reunion by Taneli Mustonen

“2015 has indeed started off well for Finnish films,” explained Kati Nuora, international communications officer at the Finnish Film Foundation: in three months, local films have sold one million tickets, which has only happened once before in the 2000s (2013). In 2001, 2005 and 2009, they did not even reach the one-million-admissions mark during the entire year.

Last year, 32 new Finnish productions were launched, to achieve slightly more than two million admissions; so far this year, 11 domestic features have been released, and another 19 have been scheduled – “accordingly, there is no need to expect less for 2015,” Nuora added.

The local production boom has increased the number of films targeted at larger audiences, most recently domestic comedies, often starring popular TV-show comedians – such as The Reunion, Dome Karukoski’s The Grump [+see also:

(403,045 in 2013).

This year’s Finnish premieres have been a particularly varied bunch – children’s films, thrillers, dramas and even an action adventure, in addition to comedies. And there is more record-breaking potential to come, with crowd-pleasers including Mika Kaurismäki’s Homecoming and Teppo Airaksinen’s Lapland Odyssey 2 [+see also:
