Emergence: The last clapperboard slams for the winners of the 17th session
Director Emilie Noblet

Yesterday, the six people selected for the 17th session of the Emergence directing residency (who, this time around, were chosen by a jury chaired by director Emmanuelle Bercot) finished three weeks of hard graft in the Paris region. The initiative enabled them to shoot one or two scenes for their feature-debut projects with support from seasoned professionals.

Among the projects at this session were Loin d'eux by Emilie Noblet (sponsored for Emergence by Chantal Akerman – produced by Juliette Sol for Stromboli Films). The story revolves around a couple (a labourer and a housewife) whose son wishes to break free from the limitations of their lives in the provinces, and who gradually becomes more and more depressed until he heads off to Paris to work as a waiter. One day, someone comes to tell his parents that he has committed suicide...

Sponsored by Olivier Assayas, the project La vie, Animal by Vincent Vivioz (produced by Marie Darel for Les Productions Balthazar) features a Scottish man as its lead character. He arrives in France and starts working as a temporary labourer on a building site, a tough job that he puts up with because he has one goal in mind: to see his little daughter again, whom he barely knows... The screenplay is co-written by Samuel Doux.

Meanwhile, Une histoire de l'art by Lucas Bernard (sponsored by Pierre Salvadori – produced by Florian Môle for Les grands Espaces Films) tells the story of an inquiry into the daring theft of a painting.

Vlad by Liova Jedlicki (sponsored by Cristi Puiu – produced by Pierre-Emmanuel Fleurantin and Laurent Baujard for Paprika Films) revolves around an encounter that takes place in prison between a man who got mixed up in drug trafficking in order to pay for an operation for his child, who is still in Romania, and a playwright leading poetry workshops. The screenplay was co-written by Alexandra Badea.

Le dépanneur by Julien Guetta (produced by Christophe Barral and Toufik Ayadi for Les Films du Worso) was co-written by Dominique Baumard. The plot sees a man who is almost in his forties – but who still leads the life of a teenager – sleep with one of his clients one evening, who then takes off in the early hours of the morning, leaving him stuck with her three children. He wants to get himself out of this situation as quickly as possible, but the social worker he bumps into happens to be a woman he walked out on ten years earlier...

Le ramage et le plumage by Nicolas Maury (sponsored by Arnaud Desplechin – produced by Géraldine Michelot for Mona Films) follows the trials and tribulations of a 30-year-old actor who has a little experience in the job, but still not enough to enable him to enjoy his passion and private life in peace... Sophie Fillières collaborated on the writing of the screenplay.

Emergence was founded in 1998 by Élisabeth Depardieu, who is in charge of its artistic direction. Among the winners of its previous editions are 40-Love [+see also:
