German distributors pick up Cannes films and market premieres

At the 56th edition of the Film Market at Cannes, various German arthouse distributors such as Arsenal, Concorde, DCM, Neue Visionen and Weltkino acquired several new films and projects.

by Canadian director Xavier Dolan, who is due to shoot this drama starring Marion Cotillard, Léa Seydoux and Vincent Cassel in Quebec. Also hailing from Canada is Monsieur Lazhar director Philippe Falardeau, whose new picture, Canadian Intern, was picked up by Stefan Paul and Egon Nieser from Arsenal ahead of its world premiere at the Toronto Film Festival. by Bruno Dumont is a black comedy about two families at opposite ends of the social spectrum that will be shot with Juliette Binoche, Fabrice Luchini and Valeria Bruni Tedeschi. The Italian actress will also play the lead in Paolo Virzi’s new drama, Like Crazy, about two patients who flee their psychiatric treatment in Tuscany and head to Rome. Berlin-based distributor DCM did some good business, too, as it pre-purchased the German rights to the €19 million period drama Chocolat by Roschdy Zem from Gaumont; the movie will star Omar Sy as Cuban artist Rafael Padilla. Furthermore, DCM picked up the German-speaking rights for Cartel Land, which won the Best Director Award and the Special Jury Award for Cinematography for a US Documentary at the 2015 Sundance Film Festival.
