film profile] by László Nemes (read the review and the interview) is to represent Hungary in the race for the next Oscar for Best Foreign-language Film (which will be given out on 28 February 2016, after the nominations are creamed off on 14 January).
The feature debut by László Nemes (who wrote the screenplay together with French writer Clara Royer), Son of Saul delves to the heart of a Sonderkommando unit in Auschwitz in 1944 with a stunning degree of intensity. The lead role is entrusted to author and poet Géza Röhrig, while the film boasts the exceptional work of DoP Mátyás Erdély and that of sound man Tamás Zányi.
Produced by Gábor Sipos and Gábor Rajna for Laokoon Filmgroup, with backing from such sources as the Hungarian Film Fund, the Cannes Festival’s Cinéfondation Residence, Sarajevo Cinelink and the Jerusalem Film Lab, Son of Saul is released today in Hungarian theatres, courtesy of Mozinet.
