The attention of international distributors has been focused on Hungary this week, as it is the first territory to release the winner of the recent Grand Prix at the Cannes Film Festival in theatres: Son of Saul [+see also:

by László Nemes (read the review and the interview) has also been put forward as its country’s hopeful for the next Oscar for Best Foreign-language Film. And expectations have certainly been met, as the feature that stunned audiences on the Croisette has started off in third place in the weekly box-office chart, behind the US blockbusters Jurassic World and Spy. Released on 11 June by Mozinet in 46 theatres (two on 35mm and 44 as DCP), Son of Saul has taken 19,913 admissions in seven days, which gives it a total of 24,826 admissions if we take preview screenings into account – an excellent result considering the scale of the Hungarian market and its national arthouse films.
