Two prime examples of very different Dutch films for young audiences are reaching domestic theatres this week, proving the diversity of a genre that tends to be particularly well accepted within the Netherlands’ film industry.

Independent Films is distributing Dennis Bots’ new feature, Code M [+see also:

. Written by Tijs van Marle and Karen van Holst, the film was partially shot in the province of Limburg and centres on three teenagers who go looking for the sword of the musketeer d’Artagnan, who perished in Limburg in 1673 during the Siege of Maastricht, while serving King Louis XIV. Their only clue is a secret code that they must unravel to find the sword. They embark on a thrilling quest through caves and castles, and soon discover that they are not the only ones who want to find the sword.

Dutch outfits Bijker Film & TV and Elbe Stevens Films co-produced Code M along with Belgian partner Living Stone BVBA. The cast includes Nina Wyss, Joes Brauers, Senna Borsato, Peter Paul Muller, Hannah van Lunteren, Lotje van Lunteren, Raymond Thiry and Robert de Hoog.

, Sam de Jong’s feature debut, which was unveiled earlier this year in the Berlinale’s Generation section (watch the interview). Produced by 100% Halal along with Vice, the film follows a teenage boy, Ayoub, in his quest for affirmation and love, as well as during his various dilemmas as he is confronted by the biggest gangster in the neighbourhood. Prince stars established actors, such as Elsie de Brauw, who share the screen with newcomers like Ayoub Elasri and Sigrid ten Napel. Dutch rapper Freddy Tratlehner has a cameo, which might help to increase the film’s potential to attract younger audiences.
