Fantastic Zagreb Film Festival presents the European Genre Forum

This year, for the first time ever, the Zagreb region’s first and only genre-film festival, the Fantastic Zagreb Film Festival, will organise the European Genre Forum, as well as featuring an attractive film programme. From 2-3 July, at the Europa Theater’s Müller Hall in Zagreb, there will be round-table discussions on crowdfunding and digital film platforms, genre co-productions in Croatia and the region, ways to sell one’s film in the international market, and many other issues, as well as over ten regional and international projects in the pitching part of the Forum.

The European Genre Forum is a pan-European project initiated by the Tallinn-based Black Nights Film Festival, the Night Visions Film Festival in Helsinki, the Fantastic Zagreb Film Festival and the Paris-based film consultancy Screen Division.

The chief goal of this international project is to connect young European film producers, directors and screenwriters with other professionals who have already proven themselves. The event also intends to develop, promote and financially support different film, TV and online projects with strong European and regional traits and characteristics, as well as international co-productions outside Europe, through cooperation with European film funds, production companies and national film centres, among other institutions.

Some of the topics that will be discussed at the Forum include “Don’t Show Me the Money”, an examination of how to turn an idea into reality without any state funds; “Local Flavour, Global Taste”, which looks into how to make a genre film interesting to the international market; and “Talent Is Not Enough”, in which young and successful European directors and producers share what it takes, besides talent, for a project to see the light of day and achieve international success.

The two-day programme will feature panels and the pitching of European, Croatian and regional film projects, with over 30 speakers and participants from the UK, France, Germany, Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Poland, the USA, Norway and Switzerland, as well as regional and Croatian film professionals. The Forum has been organised with the support of the Croatian Audiovisual Centre (HAVC), Creative Europe – Media Desk, the City of Zagreb and the Zagreb Tourist Board. Attendance is free of charge.
