With total box-office takings of €545 million, German cinemas did some great business in the first half of 2015. Thanks to strong crowd-pleasers such as the German comedy Head Full of Honey [+see also:

film profile] by Til Schweiger, gross ticket sales exceeded the half-a-billion-euros mark for the first time. In comparison to the first six months of 2014, box-office results were up by 21%. According to research conducted by the Federal Film Board (FFA), in the first half of the year, 66.8 million tickets were purchased, which boils down to an increase of 18.8% in the number of cinemagoers.

film profile] had more than one million viewers. With a market share of 26.8%, German films have demonstrated a very strong presence. In total, 290 movies, among them 116 premieres of German films, were released theatrically in the first half of 2015.

With a total of 4,638 screens, the number of cinemas keeps growing. In 2015, the FFA spotted seven more sites where a cinema is now located. In Germany, 1,170 exhibition companies are currently running 1,632 cinemas. “Our industry has been waiting for a long time for such great results,” stated FFA president Peter Dinges. “In the first six months, cinema celebrated an impressive comeback.” Various US blockbusters, but also several German movies, led to this positive outcome, and the great result also reflects the courage and optimism of the exhibitors. “It is the first time in the last decade that the number of cinemas is growing again,” underlined Dinges, who has high hopes that 2015 will become a strong year for the cinemas.
