Films from Hungary

With two films selected for the sidebar sections of the Cannes Film Festival, and four in the Market, Hungary appears more than ready to rejoin the European film panorama: it is one of the ten new member states scheduled to join the EU on 1 May 2004.

In addition to shorts, Joan of Arc on the Night Bus, screening in Directors’ Fortnight, and Grenades by Péter Politzer in Critics’ Week, the Magyar Filmunio line up (the agency that promotes Hungarian cinema) includes some twenty titles including Sofia Grand Prix winner, Pleasant Days [+see also:

by Kornél Mundruczó (5 screenings), The Lunatics’ Song by Csaba Bereczki, co-produced with France’s Tracol Film, about a French doctor’s experience of a psychiatric hospital, and this year’s Hungarian Oscar candidate, Hukkle by György Pálfi. Mokép is handling international rights to Hukkle and Grenades.
