Everything is ready for the opening session of 39th Cinanima Festival tonight in the coastal town of Espinho, Portugal – the first edition since the death of its long-time director, António Gaio, last August. Up until 15 November, the selection cooked up by animation experts Catarina Sobral, Manuel Matos Barbosa, Osvaldo Medina and Vítor Lopes will see 280 movies on offer, including opening film The Snow Queen 2 by Russian director Aleksey Tsitsilin, 82 titles in competition and 14 other premieres.

This year, the national competition is exclusively focusing on short films: 24 productions in total, ten of which are also running for the António Gaio Award. Among them are André Ruivo’s Campo à Beira Mar, Raquel FelgueirasGalope and José Miguel Ribeiro’s Pastel de Nata.

The “Panorama Sessions” sidebar will focus on some of the most recent animated titles produced in the Netherlands and in Ireland, whilst also paying tribute to some of Catalonia’s most important animated shorts.

Polish animation will be in the spotlight in the “Across the Borders” section, and there will also be space for the screening of the finalists for the 2015 Cartoon d’Or.

The festival’s parallel training sessions will include conferences and workshops focused on themes such as layouts for 3D animation, perception and movement, facial expressions for animation, and storyboard construction, among other topics.
