has added the 19th UK Jewish Film Festival’s Best Debut Feature Award to its already bulging kitty. Jury director Nik Powell said, “This harrowing testament to man’s inhumanity deeply moved and shocked the jury. It is rare to come across a debut film of such power. Indeed it is rare to come across any film of such power.”

Accepting the award via video message, László Nemes added, “It’s an honour to receive this award from such a prestigious jury, it’s very special for me having my film at the UK Jewish Film Festival which showed my short film a couple of years ago. Thanks on behalf of my entire crew and cast. People think about the Holocaust more and more as something abstract, with Son of Saul I wanted to give it a human face. 

The jury also gave a special commendation to Sharon Maymon and Tal Granit’s The Farewell Party [+see also:

In all, the festival featured 127 screenings and events across London, Manchester, Leeds, Glasgow and Nottingham and witnessed 35% more sell-out screenings compared to 2014. 

Curzon Artificial Eye is releasing Son of Saul at cinemas across the UK on 1 April 2016.
