20/01/2016 - Paula Ortiz’s second movie has won six trophies, handed out by the Association of Film Journalists, followed by Cesc Gay’s Truman

Last night, the third edition of the Feroz Awards – given out by the more than 170 members of the AICE (the Association of Spanish Film Journalists) – held its glamorous, crowded and festive awards ceremony at the Gran Teatro Príncipe Pío in Madrid, presented by actress Silvia Abril. film profile], which started off as the favourite with nine nominations (read more), cashed in on six of them: Best Drama Film, Best Director (Paula Ortiz), Best Lead Actress (Inma Cuesta), Best Supporting Actress (Luisa Gavasa), Best Trailer and Best Original Score (courtesy of Japan’s Shigeru Umebayashi, a regular collaborator with Wong Kar-wai and Zhang Yimou).

In terms of the number of trophies taken home, it was followed by Cesc Gay’s Truman [+see also:

film profile], which snagged two: Best Lead Actor, for Argentina’s Ricardo Darín (who has established himself as a dead cert for the Goya Award in this category after he also pocketed the Forqué Award last week – read more), and Best Screenplay, which was penned by the Catalan director and his regular writing partner, Tomás Aragay.

In the Best Comedy category (in 2015, 32 Spanish-produced comedy titles were released, compared to 86 dramas/documentaries), the third film by Borja Cobeaga, Negociador [+see also:

film profile], came out on top, while among the supporting actors, Mario Casas was victorious thanks to his highly entertaining parodic role in Álex de la Iglesia’s romp that goes by the name of Mi gran noche [+see also:

Seasoned actress Rosa María Sardá received the first Honorary Feroz Award for Lifetime Achievement (we saw her a short while ago in the box-office smash Spanish Affair 2 [+see also:

film profile] by David Ilundáin were acknowledged, after the movie decried the scandalous Luis Bárcenas affair with both talent and bravery – it thus received the Special Feroz Award, which recognises the fact that it deserved to perform better upon its release in Spanish theatres.
