On 3 March, EXIT Med!a will bring out Urge in theatres, a film written by and starring Alessandro Bergonzoni, and directed by Riccardo Rodolfi, who has been collaborating with the playwright and stage actor from Bologna for over 30 years. Based on the hit stage show of the same name, Urge is the film of the monologue that Bergonzoni utters to rail against the shallowness and “cultural metastasis” of mass society. Over its three-year run, the show has had 280 repeat performances in theatres all over Italy, as well as in Switzerland, Germany and Spain.

Filmed with five HD movie cameras, which were used to obtain previously unseen points of view, Urge il film actually goes beyond the stage show. “We realised as we went along,” states Rodolfi, “that Urge was being transformed within the framing of the cameras – it was changing as we used tight close-ups, and as we observed actorial undertones from viewpoints that are impossible to achieve in the theatre.”

Through painstakingly careful directorial work, a unique piece of work in Bergonzoni’s career path as an artist has been born of the show: “We’ve managed to shoot a show without flipping it on its head,” the artist claims. “But none of this was by chance. It’s a bit like cinema is champing at the bit on top of me. Up until now, my appearances on the big screen have been more fleeting.”
