in 2005; also competing in 1999, 2001, 2011 and 2013) and once at Cannes (in 2008). Last year, the filmmaker opened the Directors’ Fortnight at Cannes with In the Shadow of Women [+see also:

, the screenplay for which he penned together with Jean-Claude Carrière, Caroline Deruas and Arlette Langmann – the same trio he is working with on his new opus. Lover for a Day, which will be shot in May and June, with a cast including Eric Caravaca and Esther Garrel, will tell “the story of a father and his 23-year-old daughter – who comes home one day because she has just been jilted – and the father’s new partner, who is also 23 years old and lives with him”.

The third project to have been selected is En attendant les hirondelles by Algeria’s Karim Moussaoui, who rose to fame at Locarno in 2013 with the medium-length film Les Jours d’avant. Staged by Les Films Pelléas, the movie, which will be shot next autumn, will explore modern-day Algeria through three stories that give contrasting insights into a country torn between a yearning for modernity and the burden of tradition, and between the shock and still-open scars of the Civil War and hope for the future. The project, which was developed at the Cannes Film Festival’s Cinéfondation Residency, also received the first development support grant award given out by the CNC at the Cinemed Festival.
Arte France Cinéma will also be supporting Une saison en France, the fifth feature by Chadian director Mahamat-Saleh Haroun, winner of the Special Jury Prize at Venice in 2006 with Daratt – Dry Season [+see also:

. Produced by Paris-based outfit Pili Films, the new movie by the director will begin filming in France in the autumn, starring Eriq Ebouaney and Sandrine Bonnaire. The plot, which stays well away from the clichés of poverty and exclusion, will revolve around the tragic situation of a family of asylum-seekers from the Central African Republic (a widowed father and his two children) who have fled the civil war in their country.

As previously reported, Arte France Cinéma is also supporting the upcoming films by Bertrand Bonello, Olivier Assayas, Arnaud des Pallières, Bruno Dumont, Alain Guiraudie, Paul Verhoeven, Sergei Loznitsa, Alessandro Comodin, Axelle Ropert, Hafsia Herzi, Caroline Deruas, Rayhana Obermeyer, Davy Chou, Sacha Wolff, Thierry de Peretti, sisters Delphine and Muriel Coulin, Serge Bozon, Mehmet Can Mertoglu, Kiyoshi Kurosawa, Samuel Maoz and Mohamed Diab, the documentary projects by Dror Moreh and by duo Agnès Varda and JR, and the animated features directed by Michel Ocelot, Jean-François Laguionie and Michael Dudok de Wit.
