Owing to the increasing popularity of international drama series, MIPTV is presenting the MIPDrama Screenings on 3 April. One day before the biggest content market in the world flings open its doors, a line-up of 12 international drama series will be screened to buyers for the first time.

For this new screening programme, productions from 28 countries across Europe, North America, Latin America and Asia were submitted. The 12 finalists include the Scandinavian crime drama Bordertown from Fisher King and Federation Entertainment, the Spanish suspense-thriller I Know Who You Are from Arca (Filmax), the German family drama Ku’damm 56 – Rebel With a Cause from Ufa Fiction, the Italian murder-mystery-thriller Medici: Masters of Florence from Lux Vide and Big Light Productions, as well as the British Downton Abbey successor Victoria from Mammoth Screen and Masterpiece.

The selection was made by a jury of showrunners and programme creators from five different territories. “There are so many talented people in the TV business right now, directing, writing, producing and acting, and that’s the main reason why TV drama’s hot at the moment,” commented jury member Søren Sveistrup. “Luckily, people are different, so all of these shows are very different, and the MIPDrama Screenings is really great proof of this variety.”

At the one-day event, creative talents will present 15- to 20-minute excerpts of their drama series, which will be competing for the “Coup de Coeur” Award. The prize is given out by several directors of programming and acquisitions, who represent the MIP Markets’ Drama Buyers Advisory Board.

“MIPTV is an ideal launch pad for such series,” remarked Laurine Garaude, director of Reed MIDEM’s television division. “We are planning to continue developing the MIPDrama Screenings and our drama offering in 2017.”
