MIPTV highlights new trends in the television world

MIPTV in Cannes, the world’s largest TV and digital content market, will open its doors today, welcoming around 11,000 expected participants. This year, the global entertainment event will unfold under the motto “The Power of Fans”. The traditional content value chain is transforming dramatically, with broadcasters, platforms and creators having to connect to enthusiastic audiences through attractive and innovative content. Among the keynote speakers who will address this issue is bestselling author Harlan Coben, who, with The Five, delivers his first thriller, which he has written exclusively for the screen.

The relationship between brands and fans can be transformed through content, as Fullscreen, a global network of content creators, will show at MIPDigital Fronts. Meanwhile, content creation studio Vice Media is spreading original programming across digital, mobile and linear formats, and the multi-platform player is aggressively pushing its three-screen strategy internationally. “These multi-platform networks are the next-generation studios,” says Laurine Garaude, director of television at Reed MIDEM. “As the leading international content marketplace, it’s our role to enable business deals between our core audience and these new players who are reinventing the way content is created, experienced and distributed.”

The potential and possibilities of new formats are another key topic at MIPTV. The extensive 4K Ultra HD programme includes a raft of 4K screenings, such as the world premiere of the Asian fantasy series Moribito: Guardian of the Spirit as well as a dozen conference sessions. Another focus is on virtual reality: Ted Schilowitz, futurist at 20th Century Fox, will point out the new possibilities of this game-changing technology.

The opening day of MIPTV will be rounded off by the world-premiere TV screening of Roots, which stars award-winning actors Forest Whitaker, Anna Paquin, Laurence Fishburne and Jonathan Rhys Meyers, among others. Directed by Phillip Noyce (Patriot Games), Mario Van Peebles (Lost), Thomas Carter and Bruce Beresford (Driving Miss Daisy), the historical portrait of American slavery is based on Alex Haley’s 1976 novel.
