After the announcement of the German representation in the main programme of the 69th Cannes Film Festival (read the news), the independent Critics’ Week (12-20 May) and Directors’ Fortnight (12-22 May) sections have revealed their programmes for 2016, inviting along a total of three German co-productions.

The 55th Critics’ Week has selected Mehmet Can Mertoglu’s Albüm [+see also:

(a Turkish-French-Romanian-German co-production involving Neue Mediopolis Filmproduktion), where a middle-aged couple stage a photographic pregnancy to hide the fact that they are adopting, and French-Cambodian director Davy Chou’s Diamond Island [+see also:

(German co-producer: Vandertastic), about two brothers who meet again, social classes, and today’s Cambodian youth.

Laura Poitras, will be screened at the 48th Directors’ Fortnight. This half-American work co-produced by Praxis Films Berlin, presented as a follow-up to the story of Snowden’s extraordinary gesture, immerses us in the lives of Julian Assange and the technologists, volunteers and reporters behind WikiLeaks. Once again, Poitras goes behind the scenes (following Assange into asylum and the WikiLeaks team into exile) to defend the actions of whistleblowers. The world sales of Risk are handled by Submarine.
