The 47th edition of Visions du réel in Nyon came to a close with a surprising and rich list of winners, bestowing the most prestigious award of the festival, the Sesterce d’or for best film in the international feature film competition, to Chinese film Another Year by Shengze Zhu. Another Year submerges the audience into the intimate sphere of a family of Chinese migrants, in their daily routine made up of small gestures and ancestral ties, but also paints a picture of the social and economic difficulties they face over the course of their odyssey.  by Pierre-François Sauter, which was awarded the jury’s special mention. This year’s list of prize-winners includes no fewer than five Swiss films between productions and co-productions. European productions and co-productions have also done very well, winning important prizes such as the Sesterce d’or George for best medium-length film (Sit and Watch by Matthew Barton and Francisco Forbes, United Kingdom), the Sesterce d’argent Regard Neuf for best first film (The Dazzling Light Of Sunset [+see also:

by Salomé Jashi, Georgia and Germany) and the special mention Regard Neuf (Triokala, The Three Gifts Of Nature by Leandro Picarella, Italy). Turning to the international short film competition, I’m Not From Here by Maite Alberdi and Giedré Žickyté (Chile, Lithuania, Denmark) won the Sesterce d’or Fondation Goblet for best short film.

A 47th edition that ended on a high note, demonstrating just how much Visions du réel still has to show. Nor did it let down its reputation as a shining beacon in the field of documentary film, setting a record this year with more than 39,000 viewers.
