Famous Serbian actress and director Mirjana Karanović's A Good Wife [+see also:
film profile] has just started its distribution in Serbia and Montenegro. After world-premiering at Sundance, the film won the Best Actress Award at Belgrade FEST and the Milutin Čolić Award from the daily paper Politika.
A Good Wife is a story of remembrance and forgiveness, in which the main character (played by Karanović) finds out that her husband took part in war crimes perpetrated by the Serbian Army in Bosnia and Herzegovina. At the screenings at FEST, Karanović had inspiring and emotional discussions with the audiences, which prompted her to follow the film to its premieres in Serbian and Montenegrin cities.
This weekend, the film was released in Belgrade, and although the box-office figures are not promising (a total of 2,262 admissions, including FEST screenings), newly established distribution company Fame Solutions is hoping to capitalise on the direct contact between the popular actress and filmmaker and the audience, and her image as a social and political activist.
“The opening results may be underwhelming, but this is a consequence of the infrastructure, rather than the quality of the film,” says Marko Čkonjević, CEO of Fame Solutions, for Cineuropa. “This is a film that certainly does not fit the mainstream system of multiplex distribution that is dominant in the Serbian market, regardless of its quality. I believe that the tour that Mirjana Karanović is going to do will significantly contribute to the film's box-office results outside Belgrade. Our audiences know how to reward authors who show respect to them, and Mirjana has been constantly popular for decades because she loves her audience. Serbian viewers who are not as over-saturated with cultural content as those in Belgrade will definitely want to see the first directorial effort of the popular actress.”
Karanović will follow the film's release in Novi Sad (27 April), Zrenjanin (7 May), Čačak and Užice (8 May), Gornji Milanovac and Kraljevo (14 May), Subotica (15 May), and then in Montenegro: Podgorica and Budva (21 May).
Meanwhile, Films Boutique, which handles the international sales for the film, has reported that it has sold A Good Wife for theatrical distribution in Bulgaria (Film Vision), Poland (Aurora Films), Switzerland (Look Now!), Greece (Filmtrade) and Macedonia (CutAway), and for pay TV to Sundance Channel for Spain, Portugal, Canada and Asia/the Middle East.
