Sergio G Sánchez makes the leap to directing with Marrowbone

film profile], the scripts for which were penned by his friend Sergio G Sánchez (Oviedo, 1973), will serve as the executive producer on the latter’s much dreamed-of baby step as a feature-film director: Marrowbone. This English-language film with an international cast will receive financial backing from Telecinco Cinema, Marrowbone SLU and Reunidos en el Ático AIE, with the involvement of Mediaset España and Movistar Plus+, and it will start shooting for a month and a half in late June, on location in Asturias, and with interiors in Terrassa (Barcelona).
From the plot of the film – a thriller with romantic and horror elements, written by Sánchez himself (who won the Goya for Best Original Screenplay in 2008 for The Orphanage) – we can deduce that Marrowbone will share many characteristics with the other stories that have so far emerged from his mind and have earned him much renown: four brothers, afraid of being separated following their mother’s death, hide away on their farm – but its walls hide some dark and dreadful secrets.
The project has just been presented at the Film Market of the most recent Cannes Film Festival, and Lionsgate has already sold it to 50 territories, ranging from Latin America to Eastern Europe. Several months ago, some Spanish media outlets claimed that Sergio G Sánchez (who also wrote the scripts for The End [+see also:

film profile]) would make his directorial debut by adapting the successful stage play Smiley, una historia de amor by Guillem Clua, which picks apart gay stereotypes, but ultimately, Marrowbone will represent his baptism in the feature-length font.
