A raft of European films in the parallel sections of the Locarno Film Festival
The Girl With All the Gifts by Colm McCarthy

True to its traditional reputation as a festival keen to head off the beaten track, the new edition of the Locarno Film Festival (read news) will open its parallel sections up to films by both accomplished directors and auteurs who broke through at Locarno in the past, as well as young fledgling filmmakers.

The Piazza Grande will host 16 movies, two of which are dedicated to the history of cinema. Among them are arthouse films, such as Endless Poetry [+see also:

In the Filmmakers of the Present competition, we find a total of 15 movies (13 of which will be having their world premieres) that come to the fore once again thanks to their sheer subversive power, and provide myriad powerful and varied perspectives on an uncertain present. Two Swiss films feature among them: Il nido [+see also:

by up-and-coming Italian director Michele Pennetta, an ECAL graduate. Meanwhile, the Signs of Life competition gathers together eight titles by young filmmakers who have taken on the important task of sketching out the guidelines for cinema to come.

There are also many events happening out of competition, including a major retrospective devoted to post-World War 2 German cinema, the Leopard of Honour being bestowed upon Alejandro Jodorowsky, the Excellence Award that will be handed to multifaceted actor Bill Pullman and the Pardo alla carriera (Lifetime Achievement Award) that will go to legendary German actor Mario Adorf, not to mention the Vision Award, which will serve to recognise iconic composer Howard Shore. Topping off this rich programme that gives much food for thought, we have the unmissable Panorama Suisse, which will present ten prime examples of Swiss films from this year.
