by Danis Tanović has been selected as Bosnia and Herzegovina's Best Foreign-language Film Academy Award candidate, the country's Association of Filmmakers announced today.

Tanović is the only filmmaker from the territories of the former Yugoslavia with an Oscar in the category, which he received in 2002 for No Man's Land [+see also:

. He also ran for the award in 2010 with Circus Columbia [+see also:

, and in 2013 his An Episode in the Life of an Iron Picker [+see also:

was shortlisted among the nine submissions in the penultimate round of voting. Both this film and Death in Sarajevo won Silver Bears at the Berlinale, where they world-premiered, with the former also winning Best Actor for non-professional Nazif Mujić and the latter scooping the FIPRESCI Prize.

Death in Sarajevo, loosely based on the monodrama Hotel Europe by Bernard-Henri Lévy, revolves around the 100th anniversary of the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, and looks at both contemporary Bosnian and European society. It is a co-production between Bosnia's SCCA/Pro.ba and France's Margo Cinema, with The Match Factory handling the international sales.
