The selection of the 14th Zagreb Film Festival, to be held from 12-20 November, includes a record-breaking number of Croatian productions in competition. This edition of the gathering also marks the highest ever number of films directed by women in its history. In total, 33 titles are in the running for the Golden Pram – 13 features, ten shorts and ten works in “Checkers” (a short-film competition programme focusing on new auteurs, considered one of the most important platforms for the promotion of young talents in Croatia).

The ZFF has announced some very important new additions to its upcoming iteration. The “Together Again” section is now a competitive programme that will present the Golden Bicycle Award to the best film. The programme screens new films by renowned auteurs whose first or second features have already been shown at previous editions of the ZFF. . Another special feature is the “Inclusive Screenings” programme, which includes titles suitable for those who are blind, visually impaired, deaf or hard of hearing.

Well thought-out and appealing thematic sections accompany the competition programmes: debut films by Irish directors will be screened to celebrate the 100th anniversary of the Irish fight for independence, historian Daniel Rafaelić has curated a selection of the best comedies from Eastern European cinema, there will be a “Mockumentary” programme focusing on this specific genre, “The Great 5” features top films from the five largest powerhouse countries of European cinema, while the “PLUS” competition comprises coming-of-age films selected by high-school students. This year, and once again in collaboration with the European Parliament, the ZFF is organising the LUX Film Days, which will present the three nominees for the LUX Prize (read the news).

For film professionals and audiences with a particular interest in this field, a special industry programme is being held for the fifth time. Among the events within it are “This Is How WE Do It!”, a special event linking the 25th birthday of MEDIA and Canada’s imminent entry into Eurimages, and a master class with the co-writer of HBO’s new serial The Young Pope, Tony Grisoni.
