, director Nicolae Constantin Tănase is currently in post-production with his second feature, Heads and Tails, a drama about a day in a man’s life. The film is being produced by Anamaria Antoci of 4 Proof Film and co-produced by Marek Novák from Czech production company Xova Film.

The screenplay, written by Tănase together with Raluca Mănescu (also the co-writer of The World Is Mine), follows Laurenţiu, a man waiting for his brother to come back from abroad. During an altercation in a club, Laurenţiu receives a hard blow to the head. He refuses to be hospitalised and barely manages to get back home, desperate to confess something to his brother, whose arrival has been delayed. The film shows his experiences over the next day, but also glimpses of his past, and everything is put into context by the possibility that this may be Laurenţiu’s last day.

The movie was shot in October 2015, with additional shooting days at the end of 2016. Alex CălinIulia Ciochină and Florin Salam play the main parts in the film, and Daniel Kosuth is the DoP.

Anamaria Antoci tells Cineuropa that the €150,000 project received support (of circa €22,000) as a short film from the Romanian National Film CenterHeads and Tails also received a co-production grant from the Czech Film Fund.

Nicolae Constantin Tănase says the film was inspired by a news item in the Romanian press. Intrigued by how the event was covered in the media, he and his writing partner wanted to explore the idea of perception. As for the decision to make a feature instead of a short film, the director says that following improvisation exercises with the actors, he “started to realise that time is a crucial factor in understanding the protagonist’s drama and how he got there”.

Heads and Tails will be released in 2018.
