After Turkish filmmakers last year, this year the La Rochelle Film Festival is focusing on contemporary Israeli film with 16 titles from a generation of filmmakers born in the 1970s, who use fiction and documentary to decipher the complexities of their country. A generation marked by a strong presence of female directors, who use their female sensitivities to question some of the patriarchal and warlike values of Israeli society. The line-up most notably includes three films that have yet to be released in France: She is Coming Home by Maya Dreifuss and documentaries Post partum and Hotline by Silvina Landsmann. ), German director Volker Schlöndorff (11 films), Romanian Andrei Ujica (with his documentary trilogy on the end of communism), Colombian director Rubén Mendoza (full filmography) and Japanese filmmaker Katsuya Tomita (full filmography). Looking to the past, the festival’s 2017 retrospectives will be dedicated to Andreï TarkovskiAlfred Hitchcock and Michael Cacoyannis, and the "D'hier à aujourd'hui" section will focus on 22 films from the history of film.

Audiences will also have the opportunity to see 47 very contemporary and high-quality titles, including a selection fresh from Cannes featuring Palme d’Or winner The Square [+see also:
