PRODUCTION Germany

Senator in trouble

by

Berlin-based Senator Entertainment, one of Germany’s leading producer-distributors is in trouble. Headed by Hanno Huth, the company posted losses of around Euros178m this year, more than double last year’s figure of Euros64, and bankruptcy is looking more and more likely. Should Senator Entertainment go under, it will have serious repercussions on the Teutonic industry as a whole: Senator is a majority shareholder in most of the country’s leading production companies such as Vilsmaiers Perathon, Till Schweigers’ Mr Brown Entertainment and especially X-Filme Creative.
For the time being, nobody can say whether Senator’s latest film, Das Wunder von Bern (The Berne Miracle) by Sönke Wortmann, a comedy about the 1954 German soccer championship – will be released on schedule this autumn.
In spite of all this Mr Huth is optimistic: “The future will be positive for Senator.” However, Huth’s poor judgement in a number of important issues, like the group’s costly merger with Cinemaxx and the fallimentary joint venture with Joe Roth’s Revolution Pictures (Black Hawk Down, Erin Brockovich are said to be the reason for Senator’s current problems.
