Canneseries fires the first shot

- The first edition of the event, specifically created to compete directly with the Lille Séries Mania Festival, kicks off today on the Croisette

Canneseries fires the first shot

War was declared the moment the French public authorities chose Lille as the host-city for a large international festival dedicated to television series in France, whereby Cannes refused to accept their decision, taking matters into its own hands. Thus far, the duel between the two has largely been fought through media announcements, but the time has now come for the two competitions to come face to face, with today’s opening of the first edition of CANNESERIES (running from 4 to 11 April), and the 9th edition of Séries Mania (the first to be held in Lille) set to run from 27 April to 5 May (see news for programme developments).

This new Cannes-based event which has latched itself onto the MIPTV market (running from 9 to 12 April, with more than 10,000 professionals expected to attend) will open outside of the competition with the 3rd series of Versailles (produced by France and Belgium). The ten series selected for the competition (from 7 to 11 April) will be judged by a team presided over by the American writer and series creator Harlan Coben (who will be supported by German actress Paula Beer, her Turkish counterpart Melisa Sözen, French director Audrey Fouché, Canadian-Chilean score-composer Cristobal Tapia de Veer and American actor Michael Kenneth Williams). Five of the ten contenders are European, including the German series The Typist, Belgian series Undercover, Spanish series Félix (created by Cesc Gay), Italian series Cacciatore - The Hunter and Norwegian series State of Happiness. Other series come from South Korea, the US, Israel (two series) and Mexico (a series co-created with Gael Garcia Bernal).

Also worth mentioning outside of the competition are the American-Canadian production La Vérité sur l’affaire Harry Quebert (The Truth About the Harry Quebert Affair) by Frenchman Jean-Jacques Annaud and, closing the festival, the British series Safe (created by Harlan Coben).

This first edition of CANNESERIES, sponsored by Danish actress Sidse Babett Knudsen (Borgen), will also host a competition for shorter formats, as well as a number of masterclasses led by the British actress Michelle Dockery (Downton Abbey, Godless), the American actor Michael C. Hall (Dexter, Safe) and two members of the “award jury”: Michael Kenneth Williams (The Wire, Boardwalk Empire) and Harlan Coben. Without forgetting, of course, In Development, the Cannes Drama Creative Forum which will take place on 10 and 11 April and for which 8 projects in development have been selected (including GR5 from Belgium, Les misérables from France, Strange Fishing Sundays from Spain, The Machinery from Sweden, and The Sources of Evil from Germany), as well as  four early stage projects (including British works Class A and Selfies, and Icelandic work Violator), all of which will be pitched to a number of special-guest professionals.
