Maxime Govare and Cédric Le Gallo shooting The Shiny Shrimps
by Fabien Lemercier
- Nicolas Gob, Alban Lenoir and Michaël Abiteboul are among the cast of this Les Improductibles Films and Kaly Productions production, which is being sold by Charades
After having kicked off in early June with one week of shooting in Croatia, principal photography for The Shiny Shrimps [+see also:
film profile] by Maxime Govare and Cédric Le Gallo is currently in full swing in Alsace. This is the third feature by Maxime Govare, following I Kissed a Girl [+see also:
film profile] (co-directed with Noémie Saglio in 2015) and Daddy Cool (2017), and the first one by Cédric Le Gallo.
The cast includes Belgium’s Nicolas Gob (who played a recurring character in the series Un village français), Alban Lenoir (nominated for the Lumières Award for Best New Actor in 2016 for French Blood [+see also:
film profile], also popular in The Sower [+see also:
interview: Marine Francen
film profile], currently gracing screens in Angel Face [+see also:
film profile]), Michaël Abiteboul (who turned heads in the series Le Bureau des Légendes and The Returned, as well as in Les Hommes du feu [+see also:
film profile], Daddy or Mommy [+see also:
film profile] and Divorce French Style [+see also:
film profile]) and Geoffrey Couët (who played the lead role in Paris 05:59 [+see also:
film profile]). Other cast members include Romain Brau, David Baiot, Félix Martinez, Pierre Samuel, Romain Lancry and Roland Menou.
The story, written by the pair of directors in conjunction with Romain Choay, revolves around Matthias, an Olympic champion at the end of his career, who makes a homophobic statement on TV. His punishment is to coach the Shiny Shrimps, a flamboyant amateur gay water-polo team. They have only one goal in mind: to qualify for the Gay Games in Croatia, where the hottest international LGBT athletes compete. It's the start of a bumpy and joyful ride... Faster, higher, stronger.
Produced by Renaud Chélékian for Les Improductibles Films (a partner on the two previous features by Maxime Govare) and by Edouard Duprey for Kaly Productions (which previously worked on I Kissed a Girl), The Shiny Shrimps is being co-produced by Charades. Having been pre-purchased by Canal+ and Ciné+, the feature has also secured backing from the Grand Est region, the city of Mulhouse and the Indéfilms Sofica. The seven-week shoot includes one week in Croatia, five in the Grand Est region and one in Paris (including footage to be recorded on 4 August at the Stade Jean-Bouin for the opening ceremony of the 2018 Gay Games). The French distribution will be handled by Universal Pictures France, while the international sales will be entrusted to Charades.
