LOCARNO 2003 Tribute

Ruth Waldburger honoured

by

The second Raimundo Rezzonico award went to Zurich-based film producer Ruth Waldburger, the founder and CEO of Vega Film. Last year’s winner was Portugal’s Paulo Branco.
In spite of Switzerland’s relative isolation, Ruth Waldburger has spared no effort in circulating the films of world renowned cineastes like Jean-Luc Godard, Alain Resnais, Claire Denis, Theo Angelopoulos, Léa Pool, Bela Tarr, Robert Kramer and Robert Frank (to name a few) by either producing or co-producing their work. On the domestic front, Waldburger has been tireless in outsearching and discovering new talent. It is thanks to her efforts that people like Marcel Gisler, Markus Imboden or Jacob Berger came to the forefront of public attention. Waldburger’s remarkable business instincts are behind the support she gives to popular comedies (as well as auteur-driven titles) like Ernstfall in Havanna by Sabina Boss – the best performing Swiss film of 2002) and films for television. Once again, the SFr 10,000 Raimundo Rezzonico prize rewards the daring, pragmatism and cool headedness of a consummate professional.
