Spamflix, a new VoD platform for unconventional cinema
- A new online distribution platform with a focus on unique, unorthodox, absurd films launches
Launched in October 2018, spamflix.com is a new worldwide VOD platform focusing on films that are outrageously weird, funny, visionary, geeky, transgressive, bleeding-edge, shocking and nonsensical. Founded by Markus Duffner and Julia Duarte, who have been working in the film industry for over a decade, the platform puts together an extravagant line-up of films, most of which are difficult to fit into one precise genre and are not readily available. The name of the platform, inspired by Monty Python’s avant-garde comedy, hint to its editorial line, which includes indie cult auteurs such as Christoffer Boe, Sion Sono, Don Coscarelli, Khavn, Hitoshi Matsumoto, Onur Tukel, Quentin Dupieux, Sang-ho Yeon, Davide Manuli and Benoît Forgeard.
For Duffner, “the films share an ability to surprise, shock, entertain and amaze through their poetical zaniness, powerful visual identity, outraging social commentaries, silliness, ingenious comedy and absolute absurdity.” Reaching out to a worldwide niche audience, composed not only of cinephiles interested in discovering new directors, but also film fanatics, followers of cult filmmakers and youngsters who are familiar with the internet environment, Spamflixpresents an online distribution brand which bets on the ludic and wide power of the cybernetic world, not only by screening films, but also by promoting games, such as quizzes, guessing games and, in the near future, videogames related to its contents.
Apart from the films – mainly features, but also some shorts – Spamflix offers some additional content, such as “making ofs”, interviews and “behind the scenes” and intends, in the near future, to present brand new discovered titles selected via its online submissions section. Any international filmmaker or producer can send their features to the platform, which will select titles that fit into its curatorial line.
