, drew 83,266 theatre-goers into cinemas during its opening weekend, grossing €494,386 (totting up 86,971 visitors in the opening week), thus becoming the most successful domestic film ever. Curiously enough, The Rift snagged the crown from Bebjak’s previous project, The Line, which was seen by 69,242 paying viewers during its opening weekend. Besides setting a new record for the opening weekend of a domestic film, The Rift came in in fifth place in the overall chart of the best opening weekends, outperformed only by US imports, such as The Minions, Fifty Shades of Grey, Fifty Shades Freed and Avengers: Infinity War.

The movie is based on a bestseller of the same name by Slovak author Jozef Karika and revolves around a local urban legend about people mysteriously disappearing in the Tribec mountain range. The thriller is actually a by-product of a small-screen adaptation set to be broadcast in August.

The original television series for domestic commercial channel TV Joj was edited from three 45-minute parts into a 111-minute theatrical cut and repackaged complete with appropriate promotional initiatives. The film is being distributed in local cinemas by Continental Film, which also released the most successful domestic films of 2017: The Line, Kidnapping [+see also:

and All or Nothing (see the news).

The Rift maintained a steady box-office performance in its second week, being seen by 57,150 paying theatre-goers (The Line attracted 53,625 visitors in its second week), while already smashing through the €1 million mark at the domestic box office. It marks a positive start to the new distribution year for local productions, even resembling the record-breaking year of 2017.

The Rift was produced by Slovak production outfit D.N.A. Production (owned by producer Rastislav Šesták and Peter Bebjak) and TV Joj. The project’s budget was €609,000. Continental Film is distributing the film in domestic theatres, while D.N.A. Production is handling the international sales.
