. Moretti did however write the screenplay, along with Federica Pontremoli and Valia Santella. “I was looking for books, detective stories, inspiration or ideas," revealed the director, interviewed by the daily newspaper Il Messaggero, "when Federica suggested that I read Tre piani, it immediately seemed to be a perfect fit."

The novel is about three families who live in three apartments in the same middle-class apartment block and their stories are told in three different chapters. On the first floor is a young couple grappling with the terrible suspicion that their elderly neighbour has abused their daughter, on the second floor, a mother of two children, whose husband is always away for work, fights loneliness and the spectre of madness, while on the third floor, a retired judge and widow looks back on her past with her husband, while listening to an old telephone answering machine. The film, “maintains the spirit of the book, but with some substantial changes," states Moretti, “since the three everyday life stories "intertwine more than they do in the novel."

The film stars Riccardo Scamarcio, Margherita Buy, Alba Rohrwacher, Adriano Giannini, Elena Lietti, Nanni Moretti, Denise Tantucci, Alessandro Sperduti, Anna Bonaiuto, Paolo Graziosi, Tommaso Ragno e Stefano Dionisi. Shooting will last 16 weeks.

Tre piani was produced by Sacher Film and Fandango, with RAI Cinema and the French company Le Pacte. The film will be released in 2020 and will be distributed in Italy by 01 Distribution, in France by Le Pacte and the rest of the world by The Match Factory.
