Published by Feltrinelli and translated from Italian into 32 languages, At the Wolf’s Table has sold more than half a million copies in 46 countries. Based on the real-life experience of Margot Wölk, who confessed at the end of her life to have been one of Hitler’s young food tasters, the novel tells the story of Rosa Sauer, who, alongside nine other women, is expected to taste the meals made expressly for the Führer. Three times a day, each and every day, she is obliged to dice with death, testing these dishes for any potential poison. Within a climate of coercion, these ten women become friends but also rivals, forming alliances and betraying one another, feeling fear and falling in love. And, despite it all, their feelings of desire never leave them, because to feel desire is to remain human.

“The novel – Cristina Comencini explains – which is based upon a true story, tells perhaps for the first time how each and every war is enacted upon the bodies of women. Rosella Postorino wrote the novel based on the testimony of an elderly woman, who revealed a story shortly before she died which none of us had heard. I am very happy to have made this film and to have paid tribute to her bravery”.

The winner of numerous literary prizes in Italy, namely the Premio Campiello 2018, the Premio Rapallo, the Premio Chianti, the Premio Vigevano Lucio Mastronardi, the Premio Pozzale Luigi Russo and the Premio Wondy, At the Wolf’s Table spent 20 weeks in French best-seller lists and has also just scooped France’s prestigious Jean-Monnet European Literature Award.

“I’m very curious – Rosella Postorino enthused – to see how my character Rosa Sauer will be brought to life, in flesh and blood. It’s always exciting to see a story take shape under a different format. Lumière’s project is ambitious and I’m very happy about it”.
