At the 30th Stockholm Film Festival, Netflix, through its director of licensing and co-productions for Northern Europe, Lina Brouneus, announced its latest investment in original Nordic content. The first Swedish Netflix film will be the action-thriller Red Dot, directed by Alain Darborg, which is being produced by SF Studios.

The story follows a struggling couple in their late twenties, David and Nadja, who are now facing some serious issues with their marriage. After learning that Nadja is pregnant, the couple decides to embark on a hiking trip in the mountains of Northern Sweden, in an attempt to revitalise their failing relationship. However, their romantic trip doesn’t go quite as planned, and after the couple has a quarrel with two local hunters, they feel like they are being pursued, as a red laser dot appears on their tent. Now David and Nadja are forced to run into the wilderness, tormented by both the hunters and a past that starts to surface once again.

This is the sophomore film by Darborg, after his 2015 crime-comedy The Master Plan, but he is best known for his work in TV and his latest thriller series, Alex. Regarding the inspiration for the script, which he co-penned with Per Dickson, the director stated: “I first discovered that I was going to be a father while out hiking in the Swedish mountains. It all felt overwhelming and amazing. I was simultaneously struck by the loneliness of that place and what it might feel like if there were a maniac out in the wilderness, shooting at us. It was the combination of these emotions that was the original idea behind Red Dot – an action-thriller about the fear of becoming a parent (and being shot in the face). My ambition is to make a hair-raising film with high-octane, spectacular scenes, but with a very emotional core.”

Red Dot will be produced by Niklas Larsson, of SF Studios, who enthused: “I am so excited to be working on this project with Alain and Per. I love genre film, and when Alain and Per presented the script for Red Dot, I just felt it was a project we had to do. Alain has an extraordinary ability to entrance the audience and to balance the desire to watch with a fear of watching. To also have the chance to produce the first Swedish Netflix film for a global audience feels amazing.”

SF Studios is also currently producing the Netflix Original series Easy Money (Snabba Cash – see the news). Red Dot will be launched exclusively on Netflix and will be distributed globally by the US streaming platform.
