SURVEY Germany

The future for digital cinema?

by

"The Majors are planning a digital roll out …" ("Majors planen digital roll out"): this is the title of a new survey undertaken by the FFA – Filmförderunganstalt looking at the spread of new technology in the cinematographic industry. After an increase in the number of digital cinema screens to 140 in the whole world (as opposed to 40 in 2002), Digital Cinema Initiatives (DCI) in Hollywood is looking at a way to stimulate a higher use of the new digital systems. In fact, it is necessary to verify if the advantages proposed by DCI are able to transform the new technology into marketable products, within the space of two years, in such a way that the "digital roll out" can take place in 2005/2006.

The FFA study, which could also lead to the transformation of the German film industry, gives a detailed analysis of the consequences of future digitalisation. This more in-depth research continues on from the survey published in 2002, called "Digitales Kino kommt…" ("Digital Cinema is coming.."). The new version of the study looks at the current situation of technological development and research, gives a list of the films made using digital and the screens equipped with digital projection equipment, as well as a detailed look at the "Digital Rights Management" issue and the archive techniques. The whole study can be downloaded from the site www.ffa.de.
