ZagrebDox Pro goes online

With the 16th edition of the ZagrebDox International Documentary Film Festival already postponed owing to the COVID-19 outbreak (see the news) and bearing in mind the epidemiological situation in Croatia, the gathering’s industry training programme, ZagrebDox Pro, is adapting to the new circumstances and going online. Starting today, the programme is welcoming 12 creative documentary projects that are currently at different stages of development and production within an online environment.

It should be noted that ZagrebDox Pro has been running since the first edition of the festival and boasts a high rate of success in terms of projects completed and premiered at acclaimed festivals. One of the key tools for this is also the Pitching Forum, which was originally scheduled to be held on Thursday 19 March but will now happen online on Monday 23 March at 10:00. Marina Burić, producer of the ZagrebDox Pro programme, sees this change as a creative opportunity, which obviously also poses many challenges, since the participants are free to present their own projects in a different and innovative way.

As at the previous editions, the workshop mentors at ZagrebDox Pro are Leena Pasanen, director of the Biografilm Festival in Bologna and former managing and artistic director of DOK Leipzig, and Stefano Tealdi, an Italian director, producer and experienced film educator, who will consult with and prepare the participants for the Pitching Forum. The public sessions of the Pitching Forum are also well known for including an important number of panelists and attending decision makers. At present, the selection is being rounded off, and the names will be confirmed by Monday.

In this year’s selection, the 12 projects in the ZagrebDox Pro programme hail from 11 countries. Two of them are local, Croatian projects, and the rest come from Italy, Georgia, Hungary, Germany, Poland, Romania, Slovenia, Sweden, Belarus and Lebanon. The participants are competing for the ZagrebDox Pro Online Mentor Award, which includes one year of online mentoring by Cecilia Lidin; the HBO Europe Award, which is accompanied by €2,000 for project development; the Al Jazeera Balkans Award, with €1,000 for project development; and the DAE Mentoring Pitch Award, including free DAE membership for the director and producer as well as mentoring sessions.
