Eftyhia dominates the 11th Greek Iris Awards

After becoming one of the biggest box-office hits of recent years, attracting more than 650,000 viewers before the closure of national cinemas, Angelos Frantzis’ biopic drama Eftyhia [+see also:

has also scooped the Best Film Award and seven more gongs at the 11th edition of the Iris Awards, organised by the Hellenic Film Academy. Produced by Dionyssis Samiotis, the film narrates the life story of one of the most important Greek lyricists, Eftyhia Papagianopoulou, whose songs rose to prominence in the 1950s and 1960s and still remain popular, and who wasn’t widely known or recognised until her death in the early 1970s. The winners were announced online by the academy’s president, Yorgos Tsemberopoulos, as well as actors Elli Tringou and Christos Loulis, as the awards ceremony itself had to be postponed due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Eftyhia, which had been nominated for 13 prizes, also came out on top in the male acting categories, with Pigmalion Dadakaridis and Thanos Tokakis receiving the Best Leading and Best Supporting Role Awards, respectively, while Katia Goulioni was crowned with the Best Actress in a Supporting Role Iris. The remaining four gongs were on the technical side, with the film receiving the Irises for Best Production Design, Best Costume Design, Best Sound and Best Make-up.

Having been nominated in 12 categories, the Berlinale Panorama-premiered drama The Miracle of the Sargasso Sea [+see also:

snagged two Irises in total: Best Director for Syllas Tzoumerkas and Best Actress in a Leading Role for Angeliki Papoulia, who finally won the award after two previous nominations (in 2010 for Dogtooth [+see also:

Finally, after her third nomination (she got one nod in 2016 for the feature-length doc The Longest Run and another in 2019, in the Best Short Documentary category, for Fragments), documentarian Marianna Economou was presented with the Iris for Best Documentary for her work When Tomatoes Met Wagner [+see also:

, and in the shorts category, Konstantina Kotzamani received the Best Short Film Iris for her Venice-premiered Electric Swan, Giorgos Gousis won the Best Short Documentary Award for The Arm Wrestler, and Fokion Xenos scooped the Best Short Animated Film Award for Heatwave.
