Spain’s ICAA grants €11.9 million to projects of special cinematic value


- The institution has published the provisional list of 39 titles that it is backing in 2020, comprising 12 documentaries, 7 experimental films, and 20 fictional and animated movies

On 13 October, Spain’s Film and Audiovisual Arts Institute (Ministry of Culture and Sports – ICAA) published a provisional draft resolution concerning selective production support for feature-film projects this year. The total sum set to be divvied up amounts to €11,900,000: a minimum of 35% of this quantity is destined for films helmed exclusively by female directors, a minimum of 15% and a maximum of 25% for documentary projects, and a minimum of 8% for animated flicks. In addition, a maximum of 10% is intended for experimental features and a minimum of 5% for co-productions with foreign outfits in which Spain would have minority involvement. As indicated on the ICAA’s website, appeals against this draft resolution – which will award grants to 39 productions in total – can be made until Tuesday 20 October 2020.

The maximum sum that will be given out will be €800,000 per project, and this stands at €300,000 for co-productions with foreign companies where Spain has a minority involvement. The title that obtained the highest score during the selection process was Mantícora, written and directed by Carlos López del Rey, which is being produced by Aquí y Allí Films, and this was followed by the animated movie Unicorn Wars by Alberto Vázquez (Unicorn Wars AIE). There was a tie in terms of the number of points between La maternal by Pilar Palomero (Barrixia AIE), El ventre del mar by Majorca’s Agustí Villaronga, which is already in post-production (La Perifèrica Produccions), and Matria, the long-awaited feature debut by Galicia’s Álvaro Gago (Matriuska Producciones).

Hot on their tail are Infanta by Natalia Andrea Garagiola (Amar la Película AIE), Costa Brava, Líbano by Mounia Akl, with a screenplay penned by Akl and Clara Roquet (Lastor Media), Espíritu Sagrado by Chema García Ibarra (Jaibo Films), Que nadie duerma by Antonio Méndez Esparza (Que Nadie Duerma AIE), La imagen permanente by Laura Ferrés (Permanent Picture AIE), Cinco lobitos by Alauda Ruíz de Azua (Sayaka Producciones), Matar cangrejos by Omar Al Abdul Razzak (Tourmalet Films), Sinjar by Anna María Bofarull (Kaboga Art&Films Creations Audiovisual), La pecera by Glorimar Marrero (Solita Films), and the animated films Valentina by María Consuelo Loureiro (Valentina La Película, AIE) and Dalia y el libro rojo by David Bisbano (Doce Entertainment).

In the “projects of special cinematic value” category, the list of beneficiaries is rounded off by the thriller Sica by Carla Jiménez Subirana (Sica, Alba Sotorra, AIE), La desconocida by Pablo Maqueda (Fórmula Cine, AIE), Animal/Humano by Alessandro Pugno (Pecado Films) and Océano Titánico by Konstantina Kotzamani (staged by Galician company Frida Films).

by Paloma Zapata (Fábrica Naranja de Películas), Strange Fruit by Mauro Herce (El Viaje Films) and El futuro no nos ha cambiado, staged by the same company, which will be the brand-new work by Adrián Orr. Finally, the batch of experimental titles includes Um filme de Fernando Ruiz Vergara by Alejandro Alvarado (Azhar Media), La estafa del amor by Virginia García del Pino (Pantalla Partida) and Samsara by Vigo-born artist Lois Patiño (Señor y Señora).
