Very freely adapted by Aurélia Georges and Maud Ameline from the novel The New Magdalen by British writer Wilkie Collins, the script centres on Nélie, who escaped a miserable existence by becoming a nurse on the front in 1914. One day, she takes on the identity of Rose, a well-to-do young woman who died under her eyes. Nélie, pretending to be the dead woman, visits Madame de Lengwil (Azéma), an extremely rich woman she begins to work as a reader for. The lie works a charm, exceeding her expectations. Nélie does not only find a roof over her head, but also what she has been missing her entire life: love. But one day, the dead woman resurfaces…

Produced by Emmanuel Barraux got 31 Juin Films, La place d’une autre is co-produced by Arte France Cinéma. Also pre-bought by Canal+ and Ciné+, the feature benefits from the support of the Grand Est region and of the Cineventure and Indéfilms Soficas. After beginning on 22 October in Nancy, filming continues in Alsace and will end in the Vosges. French distribution and international sales are handled by Pyramide.

For the record, 31 Juin Films will be betting in 2021 on Marion Desseigne Ravel’s Les meilleures (read the article) whose release date remains undetermined, and features in post-production the second season of the series Hippocrate.
