Nils Holst-Jensen to direct coming-of-age thriller series What About Monica
- The series, set to be Viaplay’s next original production, will star fresh talents Filippa Coster-Waldau and Maja Thiele in the lead roles
Nordic Entertainment Group (NENT Group) has announced the making of a new Danish coming-of-age thriller, entitled What About Monica and directed by young helmer Nils Holst-Jensen, an alumnus of the National Film School of Denmark. The new Viaplay original production, penned by Julie Budtz Sørensen and based on her award-winning Danish podcast "Det med Liv", revolves around a 16-year-old girl called Louise, whose life is turned upside down when her best friend Monica is raped at a party. Burdened by guilt, Louise single-handedly begins to investigate the crime, but the more she unravels, the more complicated it becomes. When digging deeper into the case, Louise discovers that everyone has secrets and forbidden emotions, and she begins to suspect that the rapist might be someone within her circle of friends. It all comes to a head when Louise starts to develop feelings for a mysterious outsider, Thais, who – according to her friends – is the alleged rapist. Suddenly, Louise is faced with a difficult decision: should she stick with her friends, or follow her heart and defend Thais, whom she believes is innocent?
The shooting of this eight-part series began last week in Denmark. Young actresses Filippa Coster-Waldau and Maja Thiele are playing the lead roles.
Filippa Wallestam, NENT Group’s EVP and chief content officer, commented: “This series focuses on elucidating the complexity of decisions – and the related consequences – which makes What About Monica a touching portrait of the crucial teenage years, when social life dominates everything. I am really passionate about portraying the challenges of growing up today, and I believe that this unique story and the talented creative team have all the potential to attract our young adult audience and beyond.”
What About Monica is being produced by Denmark’s Nimbus Film. The series will be released on Viaplay later this year and is part of the slate of 40 new original productions set to premiere on the platform in 2021.
