First awards for domestic films

- The first edition of the awards of Luxembourg films has crowned Geneviève Mersch and her work J'ai toujours voulu être une sainte. Talk to Her won Best European film

The jury for the Lëtzeburger Filmpräis has awarded the first ever Prize for the Best Luxembourg Film, at a ceremony held in the presence of the Prime Minister, Jacques Santer, the European Commissioner, Viviane Reding and the Belgium director Frédéric Fonteyne. The event was put on by the public and professional organisations in Luxembourg, with the patronage of François Biltgen, from the Communications ministry and Erna Hennicot-Schoepges, the Culture minister. The president of the jury was the actress Josiane Peiffer, and she was working alongside Théo Péporte, Tom Hensgen, Claude Neu, Michel Cieutat, Marc Scheffen and Romain Roll. The Prize for the Best Luxembourg Film of 2003 was awarded to I’ve Always Wanted to be a Saint by Geneviève Mersch (Samsa Film) with a further prize going to the documentary L'homme au cigare by Andy Bausch (Rattlesnake Pictures). In the section for the best co-production from Luxembourg, the drama A piece of Sky by the Belgium director Bénédicte Liénard (Tarantula) was chosen out of the 14 films in competition. The prize for the Best Short Film went to If not why not, an animation film by Daniel Wiroth, who also won the prize as Promising Youngster. The jury awarded the prize for the Best technical contribution to the editing by Thierry Faber for the documentary D'Lëtzebuerger am Tour de France, while the actor Thierry van Werveke won the award for Best Actor for his performance in The Unemployment Club (Iris Production). There was a posthumous honorary award given to the documentary director, Charles "Gordian" Troeller, who died last March. The Best European film was judged to be Talk to Her by Pedro Almodovar.
