WEMW Goes to Russia

It’s only been a couple of months since the “Out of the Box” edition of When East Meets West (WEMW) wrapped (see the news), and the Italian co-production forum is already looking ahead to the 2022 edition by featuring, for the first time, a focus on Russia thanks to a new partnership with ROSKINO, a state body representing the Russian audiovisual content industry in international markets. For its next edition, WEMW will offer a broad overview not only of Russian projects and talents, but also of the funding measures recently adopted by Russia so as to boost international co-productions.

Before the event next January, WEMW and ROSKINO are joining forces for the upcoming edition of the Key Buyers Event (KBE), the leading Russian content market, and they are organising WEMW Goes to Russia, a tailor-made event exclusively dedicated to the large WEMW network of international film professionals and partners.

Taking place online from 8-10 June, KBE will introduce a specific section entirely dedicated to co-production opportunities with Russia. Recently, a minority co-production funding scheme has been launched, bringing Russia to the forefront of new, accessible financing sources and reliable co-production partners for international feature films.

WEMW Goes to Russia will feature a pitching session for five international projects at the advanced-development stage, which are looking for gap financing. The selected teams will be able to meet leading Russian producers, find possible partners and access a minority co-production support granted by the Russian Ministry of Culture. Eligible international producers can submit their fiction projects for WEMW Goes to Russia here, and the deadline is 7 May.

Furthermore, WEMW Goes to Russia’s programme will also feature a series of other initiatives tackling the new co-production opportunities offered by the Russian film industry: from panel sessions dedicated to the domestic funding landscape to bilateral networking events between Russian and international producers. WEMW will coordinate all relevant steps to enable the presence of all international delegates set to attend KBE by shaping the content of the sessions and inviting all producers who are already part of the WEMW network to join the event in early June.

WEMW Goes to Russia will offer a taste of the future 2022 focus and will be the perfect time to start promoting Russia’s new international co-production strategy. You can find more information about the KBE 2021 programme here.
