Written by Jimmy Laporal-Trésor, Sébastien Birchler and Virak Thun, the story takes us to the outskirts of Paris in 1984, to an area which has become the stomping ground of immigrants, the undesirables of the Republic. Local gang The Rascals intend to get all they can out of life. Their destination: the French capital. But a new breed of skinheads is emerging in the heart of Paris: The Boneheads, who are organised, politicised, ultra-violent and hell-bent on taking control. It marks the beginning of the war against the skinheads, and an end of innocence for The Rascals.

Rascals is produced by Manuel Chiche and Violaine Barbaroux on behalf of Spade (The Jokers Films’s production arm) and by Nicolas Blanc and Sarah Egry on behalf of Agat Films, in co-production with France 2 Cinéma. Pre-purchased by Canal+ and Ciné+, the feature film also benefits from an advance on receipts from the CNC. The seven-week film shoot will unfold between 7 June and 23 July, in Paris and the surrounding area, with Romain Carcanade (The Swarm [+see also:

) as director of photography. Distribution in France will be managed by The Jokers Films and sales by Wild Bunch International.

For the record, recent works overseen by The Jokers Films include The Swarm by Just Philippot (awarded the Critics’ Week label at Cannes 2020), while their post-production slate boasts Inexorable by Belgian director Fabrice du Welz. Agat Films, meanwhile, are finalising post-production on Robert Guédiguian’s Twist à Bamako (article), Mathieu Gérault’s Sentinelle Sud (article), Hiner Saleem’s Le Baiser de Mésopotamie and Carine Tardieu’s Les jeunes Amants (article).
