The CEE Animation Talents compilation is intended for the promotion and alternative distribution of works by the most talented young animation filmmakers from Central and Eastern Europe. It aims to present the best short films made by young and debuting artists in a given year to a professional audience and the general public worldwide.

This year, the selection includes seven films from the Czech Republic, Croatia, Slovenia, Hungary, Slovakia and Poland (for the full list, please scroll down), and they will premiere on 23 June at the Anifilm International Festival of Animated Films, which takes place in Liberec in the Czech Republic from 22-27 June (see the news).

The selection focuses on extraordinary talents whose promising work hints at successful future careers. Rather than sales, its aim is to provide support for dissemination at film markets, among film distributors, sales agents and festival programme directors.

“The original purpose of creating this annual selection was to try to make animation from the CEE region more visible abroad and help young filmmakers with their festival tours. This challenge is multiplied with the pandemic restrictions and limited possibilities to screen new animated works,” explains project coordinator Jaroslav Kocourek. This is why the organisers have high hopes for the presentation of this compilation at selected film festivals but offer rights to online events as well.

A board of experts is put together annually to select the best regional works produced that year. Festival artistic directors Annaida Orosz (Primanima, Hungary), Olga Bobrowska (Stoptrik, Poland), Pavel Horáček (Anifilm), Ivana Sujová (Fest Anča, Slovakia), Daniel Šuljić (Animafest Zagreb) and Igor Prassel (Animateka, Slovenia) participated in the selection process.

In the seven-year history of this project, more than 40 short films have been promoted, and almost 100 screenings have taken place around the world.

“Our primary ambition is the year-round promotion of the awareness of animation by young artists from CEE and assisting its further development, visibility and distribution,” says Kocourek.

CEE Animation Talents 2021 is composed of seven short, animated films without dialogue or with English subtitles. The 67-minute compilation is targeted at adult audiences. The organisers offer this programme to festivals free of charge with availability for both cinema projections and online screenings.
