One Fine Morning by Mia Hansen-Løve

UPDATE (27 April 2022): The short films in the selection are now unveiled.
-

Dedicated by the SRF to Lithuanian director Mantas Kvedaravicius, killed in Ukraine, to his colleague Oleh Sentsov currently fighting on the front line and to all artists forced to make war rather than films, the 54th edition of the Directors' Fortnight (to be held from 18 to 24 May as part of the 75th Cannes Film Festival) has unveiled a very attractive programme of 23 feature films (soon to be completed by an Asian film) dominated by an armada of 17 European filmmakers. A strong presence marked in particular by a flurry of nine French titles, an over-representation resulting, according to Paolo Moretti, the general delegate of the Fortnight (who will be stepping down at the end of this edition - read the news), from the volume of applications from France (336 French feature films applied compared to, for example, 60 from Spain).

No one will complain, however, since the Fortnight will feature new works by particularly attractive filmmakers such as Mia Hansen-Løve, Alice Winocour and Philippe Faucon, second features by the very promising Léa Mysius and Thomas Salvador, the third feature by rising star Nicolas Pariser and two documentaries that arouse curiosity, the first signed with her son by the novelist Annie Ernaux, and the second by the well-known duo of explorers of extraordinary cinematographic experiences composed of Verena Paravel and her English alter ego Lucien Castaing-Taylor. , the first French-language film by Italian director Pietro Marcello, which will open this year's edition (read the news).

The other European representatives are not lacking in relief either, since British filmmakers Mark Jenkin and Alex Garland will be taking their first steps on the Croisette, preceded by the excellent reputation of their previous films, while the Portuguese João Pedro Rodrigues will be presenting his new opus as a regular here. This wave of filmmakers from the Old Continent also includes Switzerland's Lionel Baier and, in the first features section, Spain's Elena López Riera and Ukraine's Dmytro Sukholytkyy-Sobchuk.

North America makes a good comeback (after only one title last year) with two American features (by Owen Kline and the duo Anna Rose Holmer - Saela Davis) and one Canadian (Charlotte Le Bon's directorial debut). Also to note that the Directors' Fortnight 2022 Carrosse d'Or will be awarded to Kelly Reichardt.

The showcase is completed by five first features: two from South America (by the Chilean Manuela Martelli and the Colombian Fabian Hernandez), two from Tunisia (directed by Erige Sehiri and Youssef Chebbi) and one by Lebanese filmmaker Ali Cherri which was shot in Sudan.

The programme, presented at noon today in Paris at the Forum des Images, includes 11 female directors and will arouse great curiosity, clearly placed under the sign of discoveries and enhanced by some established values that will create attraction.
