, selected in the Nuovi Mondi section of the 40th Torino Film Festival (25 November - 3 December), follows Adrien (Fabrizio Falco), art student and biographer for the artist Ernst Bollinger (Maurizio Soldà), as he finds himself involved in the story of which he is the author, as a co-protagonist in the final chapter of the artistic life of the great Master.

“In the film,” as stated in the production notes, “everything is in balance, the locations are evocative of a lost time, they are places forgotten by man as symbols of an ancient civilization, fogged, discolored: each place is the idea of a place, each room the idea of a room, stripped of the superfluous so that the characters can manifest themselves as idols. Bodies, boats, houses, islands suspended over the water and shrouded in fog; objects, people and animals are conceived as fantastic visions that emerge from the mists like distant memories. Giulio, Adrien and Ernst are body, word and symbol, a pagan trinity devoted to transfiguration, to metamorphosis, all fathers of one world and children of a common ancestor.”

La memoria del mondo was written by the director together with Giuditta Tarantelli, who was a co-writer on all of Locatelli’s previous films. The cinematography is by Paolo Rapalino, the editing by Fabio Bobbio. The sets are designed by Luigina Tusini and Elisabetta Ferrandino, while Paola Picardi has created the costumes. Massimo Mariani is the film’s sound designer, while the original score was composed by Marco Robino, who has collaborated with Peter Greenaway among other directors. “I took inspiration,” explained Robino, “from a harmonious horizon developed by a group of composers during a specific era of Italian cinema, which today seems to me partly forgotten. I’m referring to the masters Fiorenzo Carpi, Stelvio Cipriani and Gian Piero Reverberi, who marked the 1960s and 1970s of our national cinema with a unique sound, one that could build a harmonic bridge between our time and the classical-baroque era of eighteenth century Italy. To this style I have combined another with an elemental character, one that reflects and is in dialogue with the sounds of water, which is so central to the story.”

La memoria del mondo is produced by Mirko Locatelli, Giuditta Tarantelli and Paolo Cavenaghi’s Strani Film with Rai Cinema, with the support of the Friuli Venezia Giulia Film Commission, and was developed with the support of the Film Commission Torino Piemonte and Piemonte Film Tv Development Fund
