, the adaptation of the classic German novel by Erich Maria Remarque, a tale of the Great War from the perspective of a soldier. The first has won in the European Production Design (for Jim Clay's work) and the European Costume Design (for Charlotte Walter's craft) categories, while the second has grabbed the award in the European Make-up & Hair (for Heike Merker's work) and the European Visual Effects (thanks to Frank Petzold, Viktor Müller and Markus Frank) categories. Edward Berger's film is now representing Germany in the Best International Feature category at the Oscars, while Kenneth Branagh's already entered last year's race, winning the statuette for Best Original Screenplay.
