BOX OFFICE Italy

Black October for cinemas

by

Returns at the Italian box office fell during the month of October. Cinetel data shows a fall of 22% when compared with the figures for 2002, while the number of screens has risen by 9.58%. When this data is added to the total for this year, audiences have registered a “zero movement” (+0.2%) on 2002, as opposed to an increase of 10.78% in the number of screens in the country. Walter Vacchino, the president of ANEC, the association of cinema operators, said: "These figures give a worrying picture of the market. The 'zero movement' in audiences, when put together with the increase in the number of screens shows that all parts of the sector are suffering. Obviously there are different reasons for all this, starting from the imbalance in the distribution of cinemas and the lack of an system of releases throughout the year. But at the moment the main problem is the lack of a 'big film’, that will attract the audience at large".
