For the 6th time in the history of French cinema, the two “great names” of the domestic cinematographic industry, Catherine Deneuve and Gérard Depardieu will be working on the same set. They are appearing in the new film by André Téchiné, Le temps qui passe. Shooting on the film is due to start in Morocco in April.

The two French stars first appeared together in the 1980s, directed by François Truffaut (L’ultimo metro), followed by appearances in films by Claude Berri (Je vous aime) and Alain Corneau (Le choix des armes and Fort Saganne). But Catherine Deneuve and Gérard Depardieu haven’t worked together since 1988 (when they acted together in Drôle d’endroit pour une rencontre by François Dupeyron). The plot of this new film still isn’t known, though the screenplay has been written by Téchiné himself, in collaboration with Laurent Guyot (Mister V).

This isn’t the first time these actors have worked with this director (now at work on his 16th feature film). In fact, Gérard Depardieu started his career starring in Barocco (1976) while Catherine Deneuve has had a longstanding working relationship and friendship with the director, appearing in 4 of his films: Hôtel des Amériques (1981), Scene of the Crime (1986), My Favourite Season (1993) and Thieves (1996). The actress talked about this link between her and the director in 1998: “André Téchiné is one of the most important filmmakers in my life. He gave me the chance to develop my acting roles, as well as helping me develop my understanding of others”. This view is shared by Téchiné himself, who said in 1996 “Catherine has become a sister to me. Our relationship goes way beyond the world of cinema. The thing that strikes me the most about her is her natural ability, when compared with other actors. She has no specific technique and she has a totaly innocent approach in front of the camera”.

The budget for Le Temps qui passe will be around €4.5m, and the production will be led by Paolo Branco and his company Gémini Films, which is already operating on a European level thanks to a new cinema complex of 16 screens that opened in Lisbon last September.
